Climbing harness: how to choose the right one?

A rock climbing harness is essential for safe climbing. When choosing the right model, several factors should be considered. First, identify your discipline: a lightweight and compact harness is ideal for sport climbing, while a more versatile model with reinforced gear loops is better suited for multi-pitch routes or mountaineering. Next, prioritise comfort by trying different models in-store, checking the fit of the waistbelt and leg loops to avoid uncomfortable pressure points while climbing or hanging. Also, check how easy it is to adjust and tighten the buckles, especially if you often change layers of clothing. Finally, make sure the harness has enough gear loops for your needs, so you can easily carry carabiners, quickdraws, and other accessories.

How to buy a climbing harness?

Sport climbing, via ferrata, mountaineering…: the best choice for your discipline

Your chosen discipline is what truly determines the best harness for you, as different climbing styles require different features—whether you’re climbing indoors, tackling short sport routes, on multi-pitch climbs with belays, mountaineering, ice climbing, caving, or via ferrata. One crucial factor to consider is weight.

Brands like Petzl and Black Diamond offer ultralight harnesses (between 150g and 220g), making them perfect for ski mountaineering and ski touring, where technical climbing is minimal. These harnesses are easy to carry in a backpack without adding significant weight. Plus, on these models, the leg loops can be unfastened so you can put the harness on without removing your skis or crampons.

Sizing: What size climbing harness should do you need?

Brands such as Petzl and Black Diamond have their own sizing charts. We recommend taking the time to check them to ensure the right fit. Other leading names include Camp and Beal. Don’t forget, our team is also available to advise you via phone, chat, or email.

Men’s / women’s / children’s harnesses: what are the differences?

Quite logically, children’s climbing harnesses are smaller to suit young climbers’ body shapes. Note: for very young climbers, a full-body of chest harness is required rather than a standard harness, to ensure they remain upright in the event of a fall.

Adult harnesses were traditionally unisex, but brands have recently started offering specific models for men and women. Men’s climbing harnesses tend to follow the structure of older unisex versions, while the new women’s climbing harnesses generally sit higher on the hips, feature slightly wider leg loops and a slimmer waistbelt—providing improved comfort and support for female climbers.

What are the different parts of a sit harness?

Your choice of harness depends on your activity. For climbing and mountaineering, it’s important to have a comfortable harness with gear loops for carabiners, belay devices, nuts, quickdraws, etc. For mountaineering, look for models with additional ice screw holders. For ski touring, we recommend the most minimalist model possible. In most cases, all you’ll need is a single ice screw and perhaps a carabiner. Some harnesses come with adjustable leg loops, allowing you to put them on without removing your skis or crampons.

Waistbelt: for a comfortable climb

Adjustable via one or two buckles, the waistbelt is designed to offer comfort while remaining lightweight. It should sit just above your hips.

Adjustment buckles

These buckles are placed in various parts of the harness. You’ll find them on the leg loops to improve fit and to make it easier to put the harness on without removing other gear.

Gear loops

Especially important for mountaineering, most harnesses feature four gear loops. These let you carry your ice axe, carabiners, and more. Some mountaineering harnesses come with additional loops for extra gear.

Belay loop

This is the strongest part of the harness and the only section officially load-tested. This is where you clip in a carabiner to attach your belay or abseil system.

Tie-in point and rope placement

As the name suggests, the tie-in point is where the rope is secured. It’s located just below the belay loop and connects the leg loops and waistbelt.

What’s the difference between a safety harness and a climbing harness?

A safety harness is composed of straps for the thighs, chest and shoulder. This type of equipment is rarely used for rock climbing or mountaineering, except for young children. Indeed, it has led to severe injuries following head first falls. A rock climbing harness is composed of two leg loops around the thighs and a waistbelt linked together by a belay loop. There are some harnesses without a belay loop, the leg loops are then directly attached to the waistbelt.

How safe are climbing harnesses?

Climbing harnesses are designed with rigorous safety standards and are generally extremely reliable when used correctly. Certified harnesses undergo strict testing to ensure they can withstand significant force, often well beyond what a climber would typically experience during a fall. The strength of the materials, such as high-tensile webbing and reinforced stitching, ensures durability and resistance to wear. However, safety also depends on proper usage: checking for wear and tear, double-checking buckles, and ensuring a secure fit around the waist and legs. Regular inspection and adherence to manufacturer guidelines are essential. When paired with other certified climbing gear and safe practices, a well-maintained harness offers a high level of security for both indoor and outdoor climbing.
