Advantages of a down and feather sleeping bag

The main benefit of natural down is its ability to trap a large amount of air while keeping weight low. For a comparable level of warmth, a down bag is generally lighter and less bulky than a synthetic model.

It is therefore a relevant choice when every gram counts:

  • multi-day hiking
  • long-distance trekking
  • mountaineering
  • bikepacking
  • lightweight bivvying

Which down sleeping bag should you choose?

To select the right model, compare the comfort temperature, total weight, packed size and bag dimensions as a priority.

Your requirement The model to go for
Summer bivvy A lightweight bag with a comfort rating suited to mild nights
Trekking and multi-day hiking A compact model with a good warmth-to-weight ratio
Cool nights at altitude A mummy sleeping bag with a hood and enhanced insulation
Winter bivvy An extreme-cold model with generous insulation and a construction designed to limit heat loss
Ultralight use A bag with high fill power and a small packed volume

Goose down or duck down?

Both goose down and duck down can deliver excellent performance. Goose down often achieves high fill powers, but the actual quality mainly depends on the loft level, the amount of insulation and the bag’s construction.

Duck down is often a more accessible option, without necessarily being less efficient. You should therefore not choose solely according to the bird it comes from.

Fill power: a key criterion to compare

Fill power, expressed in cuin, indicates the ability of the down to loft and trap air. The higher this value, the better the down can deliver a strong warmth-to-weight ratio and a reduced packed volume.

However, this figure alone is not enough to determine how warm the bag will be. The amount of down, its distribution, the shape of the sleeping bag and the presence of a hood or thermal collar also matter.

An ideal material for cold-weather wild camping

Down sleeping bags are particularly useful for cold nights and bivvying at altitude. Their effectiveness does, however, depend on the model’s comfort temperature and the sleeping mat used.

Even a very high-performance bag will not compensate for a mat with insufficient insulation. For a coherent sleep system, always pair the two items according to the temperatures expected.

Complete your sleep system

To improve hygiene, comfort and organisation at your camp, you can complete your kit with sleeping bag liners and camping pillows.

FAQ on down sleeping bags

What is the difference between a down bag and a synthetic bag?

Down is generally lighter and more compressible for a comparable warmth rating. Synthetic insulation copes better with moisture and often requires less careful maintenance.

What is the best down sleeping bag?

The best model is the one whose comfort temperature, weight, packed volume and size match your needs.

What is the difference between goose down and duck down?

Goose down often reaches a higher fill power, but high-quality duck down can deliver excellent performance. Above all, compare the cuin rating, the amount of insulation and the total weight.

What does 90/10 mean on a sleeping bag?

This indication refers to the proportion of down and feathers. A 90/10 ratio means the fill contains 90% down and 10% feathers.

How do you wash a down sleeping bag?

Use a detergent suitable for down, select a gentle cycle and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Drying must be thorough to prevent clumping and loss of loft. Read our full article on how to wash a sleeping bag for a step-by-step guide.
